BYD M6: Beyond Limits - Day 3: Lucknow to Delhi

There are two ways to drive an EV. The first is to be practical—carefully managing your right foot and keeping the distances you need to cover in mind. The second is to throw caution to the wind, go all out, and hope you make it to your destination. On this final leg of our journey, we tried both.

On Day 3 of our Kathmandu-to-Delhi drive in the BYD M6, we covered a total distance of 553 km, driving from Lucknow to Delhi with a single charging stop in Agra, which lies 333 km from our starting point.

Given the consistent range performance of the BYD M6 throughout the trip, we decided to loosen up a little with our driving. Did the pristine Lucknow-Agra Expressway and the fact that speed cameras couldn’t register Nepali plates influence our decision? Of course not.

Cruising on the expressway was a revelation, especially for those of us accustomed to navigating narrow, battered roads. The wide, smooth tarmacs were a dream to drive on, and this is where the BYD M6 truly shone. The absence of tight corners minimized the loftiness typically felt during spirited driving. While it isn’t a car built for exhilaration, it’s impressive how effortlessly it can pick up speed when needed.

Powered by a 100 kW motor producing 250 Nm of torque, the M6 made overtaking feel effortless—a feat made even more surprising by the vehicle’s size as a 7-seater. With such confidence-inspiring performance, we couldn’t resist, as they say, giving it the beans.

But as with everything, actions have consequences. At 20% charge, it dawned on us that we needed to dial back the excitement and focus on conserving the remaining range. Although the odometer indicated we had enough juice to reach our destination, the thought of being on an expressway without nearby charging options sparked a twinge of range anxiety.

That twinge turned into full-blown anxiety when the charge dropped to 5%. With 27 km of range left, we were still 12 km away from our charging spot. Despite the math being on our side, it’s hard to shake the nerves when you’re cutting it that close. Thankfully, after a few tense minutes, we reached the charging station, plugged in the M6, and let out a collective sigh of relief. We charged to 80% while grabbing a quick lunch.

The final 220 km to Delhi was far more relaxed. By the time we arrived at the hotel, the M6 still had 30% battery remaining. Even so, we kept a watchful eye on the range for the remainder of the journey.  All in all, the trip was an incredible experience and a genuine achievement to be proud of. Completing it in an EV that accommodated seven friends only made it better.
